چکیده

Electropulsing usually reduces the stability of metastable phases in materials. This work reports the opposite effect, where electropulsing drives the stable -phase at high temperature to be decomposed. This enables both γ-phase and σ-phase in duplex stainless steel to survive and hence to strengthen the steel at high temperature. The hardness of the quenched sample after electropulsing is 49.4% higher than that without electropulsing treatment. The scientific understanding to the observation has been developed.

Stability of martensite with pulsed electric current in dual-phase steels

Softening frequently occurs in dual-phase steels under isothermal tempering of martensite. Recently, non-isothermal tempering is implemented to decrease the softening process in dualphase steels. Here, we have discovered using high power electropulsing treatment can significantly enhance the strengthening effects via the formation of ultrafine-grained ferrite with nano-cementite particles in te...

Effect of electric current pulses on the microstructure and niobium carbide precipitates in a ferritic-pearlitic steel at an elevated temperature

Niobium is an important alloying element in steels. In the present work an effort has been made to investigate the effect of electropulsing on the niobium carbide (NbC) at an elevated temperature (800 oC). The results show that the electropulsing treatment can generate an evenly distributed NbC by decreasing the kinetics barriers for precipitation. It has been also found that a semi-transformed...

Alloy by Design - a Materials Genome Approach to Advanced High Strength Stainless Steels for Low and High Temperature Applications

We report a computational 'alloy by design' approach which can significantly accelerate the design process and substantially reduce the development costs. This approach allows simultaneously optimization of alloy composition and heat treatment parameters based on the integration of thermodynamic, thermo-kinetics and a genetic algorithm optimization route. Novel steel compositions and associated...

Electropulse - induced cementite nanoparticle formation in deformed pearlitic steels

Passing one electric-current pulse through deformed pearlitic steel wires at room temperature causes the formation of cementite particles around 30 nm in size. This is found not only in some particular locations but throughout the cementite area, which reveals a different mechanism from traditional spheroidization of cementite plates because the latter leads to the formation of particles with m...
